Devil’s Slide

The steep coastal promontory south of Linda Mar, now bypassed by the Tom Lantos Tunnels.

Devil’s Slide is a rocky promontory between Pacifica and Montara whose name comes from slopes prone to failure. A road built in 1935-36 replaced the winding Pedro Mountain Road, and was often closed by landslides, including a major one in 1995.

On March 25, 2013 Caltrans closed the old road and opened the Tom Lantos Tunnels behind the cliffs. On March 27, 2014 the 1.3-mile Devil’s Slide Trail opened to walkers and cyclists on the old roadway. During World War II the headland had observation bunkers for San Francisco’s harbor defense.
